While Doom 2016 only has two locations: Mars and hell, Doom Eternal has a new location for (almost) every level. A few new mechanics are introduced like punchable switches or. They also introduce a more fleshed out parcouring system that offers a nice downtime from the intense fighting. Not only are the levels more varied (and colorfull) they also leave less room for hiding, forcing you to engage the demons. Both have fairly linear levels where you have to push buttons (or rather skulls) to open up paths (and fight off demons). Levels:Levels are an area where Doom Eternal is in my opinion better than 2016. Some other ancient civilaziation matters too but I won't go into depth here. It revolves around trying to stop the Earth being invaded by demons from hell by killing multiple demon "priests" and finally killing a giant monster. The story in Doom Eternal is more complex and requires you to actually pay attention to comprehend why you're doing what you're doing. It isn't particularly deep but it doesn't need to be since it isn't much more than a vague motivation. While Portal 2 had more locations and more varied gameplay, the general narrative, pacing and atmosphere of the first game are superior.The story in Doom 2016 revolves around trying to close a portal to hell and is pretty straight forward. The difference reminds me of Portal and Portal 2. There are a more cutscenes which are often in the third person perspective. It on the other hand has a variety of different locations which are isolated from one another since you teleport yourself to the starting point from your ship, the fortress of doom.
This continuity is one of the biggest strenghts of Doom 2016 and an area where it is superior to Doom Eternal.

Story, Progression:Doom 2016 is overall more focused and shorter than Eternal, with a back to back progression of increasingly hard levels. This post will contain some spoilers for both games. Having played both games now I can see where this opinion comes from though I still disagree with it. I hadn't heared that much about these games before apart from the fact that they had amazing gameplay and that a lot of people preferred Doom 2016 to its sequel. I recently beat both Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal.
